For the month of February, Black History Month, the St. Andrew’s Book Group selected Lisa Wingate’s The Book of Lost Friends, a 2020 novel inspired by historical events. The “Lost Friends” were advertisements that appeared in Southern Newspapers after the Civil War as freed slaves searched for family and loved ones who had been sold off.
Following two time-lines, the book tells the story of three young women searching for family in the post-Civil War South and of a modern-day teacher who learns their story and sees its vital connection to her students’ lives.
