St. Andrew’s Book Group will read and discuss The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. Published in 1985, this dystopian novel is set in a near-future New England state, the Republic of Gilead, which has overthrown the US government. The narrator, Offred, is a “Handmaid,” a woman who is forcibly assigned to produce children for the “Commanders,” the ruling class in Gilead. The novel has won or been nominated for many prestigious awards. It has been adapted into a 1990 film, a 2000 opera, and a 2017 television series. Visitors and newcomers are always welcome.
