Antietam Field Trip

May 20, 2017 @ 8:00 am - 8:00 pm

Last August’s bus trip to Gettysburg was so successful that we have decided to schedule a trip to the Antietam National Battlefield Park this year. The date will be Saturday, May 20. We will meet at the church parking lot at 8 AM for an 8:30 AM departure. Our battlefield tour will be from 1:00 PM- 4:00 PM, led by one of the superb licensed battlefield guides who work there. Our bus, which is limited to 33 people, will be able to negotiate all the park roads. (If we have more people interested, a waiting list will be established after we reach 33.) We will stop for an early lunch, 11:15 AM-11:30 AM, at a restaurant to be determined. Our estimated time of return will be 8 PM. The cost for the trip will be $30 person and you will be responsible also for paying for your lunch. We will provide bottled water and snacks for the trip.

Antietam is the site of the bloodiest one-day battle in American history. Twenty-three thousand soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of savage combat on September 17, 1862. (For perspective, the total American casualties for June 6, 1944, were 10,000.) The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia’s first invasion into the North and led to Abraham Lincoln’s issuance of the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.

If you have any questions or want to make a reservation, please contact Walter Wells at waltermolly@gmail.com. Checks should be made payable to St. Andrew’s with a memo noting that it is for the Antietam trip. Please leave all payments in the church office.
