November 25:  Linda Freeman will share Poverty: 19th-Century Views and 21st-Century Issues with observations taken from Charles Dickens, Benjamin Disraeli, Elizabeth Gaskell, Charles Kingsley, and George Bernard Shaw

How we view our impoverished neighbors is framed by contradictory myths and stereotypes that have deep roots in western culture. Narrative examples from Victorian writers help us examine our own preconceptions and gain insight to 21st-century approaches to poverty. Please join us for this return visit by Dr. Linda Freeman, retired lecturer of English Literature at the University of Maryland and group leader, American University Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
