The St. Andrew’s Book Group has selected an American classic, The Winter of Our Discontent, by John Steinbeck for August. First published in 1961, Steinbeck’s final novel is the story of grocery clerk Ethan Hawley, a man known for his honesty and integrity, who chooses to use dishonest means to restore his family’s faded fortunes. A novel dealing with morality and corruption, it has recently been called “a philosophical text for our times . . . as impressive today as when it was written.” Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature the year after the book’s publication.
